Wooden Dragon Maedate (crest) were often crafted for wealthy samurai or gifted to them from their Daimyo or occasionally the Shogun himself. The dragon or “Ryu” hold an important significance in Japanese mythology. Ryu (dragon) are associated with both the heavens and water, they represent generosity, benevolence, experience and wisdom. Using their power and strength for good and protection they are favored by the imperial family. According to Japanese tradition, there are six dragon variants. They are Sui, Han, Ri, Fuku, Ka, and Hai, which are often written with the word “ryu” (dragon) on the end, for instance “Sui-ryu”. These variants have their own meaning or name for the dragon. For example, Sui is the king of dragons, so their name is “Sui-ryu”, meaning King of the Dragons. Ri-ryu is the name of a dragon who possess extraordinary vision.
