Description

Traditional Hakama Shita, Iron Mountain Armory has meticulously researched older Sengoku and early Edo era clothing sets to bring you the most authentic and traditional hakama shita (hakama top). By selecting the most common and practical features from these periods, we have crafted a traditional samurai clothing set that is historically accurate, strong, and durable.

Our handcrafted samurai clothing sets are perfect for martial arts training, historical reenactment, LARP, cosplay, or even casual wear for those who favor the samurai attire. Wearing these traditional garments can ignite your internal warrior spirit, allowing you to embrace the samurai persona with passion and authenticity.

Iron Mountain Armory offers 2 styles of  traditional hakama shita:

Style 1 Traditional Cross-Over Gi Top
– Designed to cross over the chest with a shorter slit along the side and no lace on the lapels. This style provides a snug fit and is ideal for wearing under your armor and martial arts training.  This style of hakamashita was less formal and was even worn by monks, farmers and peasants.

Style 2 Open Lapel with Odoshi Ties
     – Is a more formal style of short kimono commonly worn with the traditional hitatare or yoroi hitatare. It features slits under the armpit for venting and the ability to wear this kimono in 2 different ways. It can be worn open at the front or wrapped around the body (when in combat or worn under armor). They have ties on the lapel which can be simply tied and hung at the front with an open chest on formal occasions or tied around the back, often when wearing armor, to help keep the hakamashita closed snuggly around the warrior’s torso.  The longer slit on the side makes it easier to confirm around the body.  This style of hakamashita was first worn solely by Daimyo in the 12th century and then became common dress for the samurai class. This style of hakama-shita was unique to Daimyo, samurai bushi and bakufu (ruling government class) only.

To make your hakama shita more period-authentic, we offer two era-specific material options:

  • Sengoku / Muromachi Era (Warring Era)
    • Uses strong hemp linen to create durable clothing that can withstand the rigors of battle and training.
  • Edo Era (Peaceful Era)
    • Utilizes softer cotton materials influenced by European trade, offering comfort and ease of movement. Additionally, some art. silk options are available, reflecting the luxurious fabrics more common during the Edo period.

The primary difference between these options is the material used, ensuring that your hakama shita is as period-authentic as possible.

For either style, we offer the option wide or narrow sleeves and lace ties to be added for wide sleeve hakama tops.  They are not offered for narrow sleeves. The lace ties the sleeve closed at the wrist or above the elbow to keep the wide sleeves from interfering with some activities.  Wide sleeve with the lace are common with the kukui (tied) hakama. The narrow sleeves are typically a little more comfortable when wearing kote (armored sleeves). However, the wider sleeves feature an opening at the armpit to aid in venting and making it possible to wrap it around your arms to help add extra padding / protection, under the kote.

This hakama shirt compliments our traditional Samurai Hakama. A Juban Shitagi is traditionally worn as an undershirt with the length dropping to knee level. You can custom request custom sizing for your Hakama Shita.  Our samurai clothing and accessories are featured in many movies, tv series, documentaries, including the docudrama “Age of Samurai: Battle for Japan” by Netflix & the Smithsonian Channel.

  2. The final result and textile was excellent… my advice here is to be a descriptive comparison of the size between America Europe China and Japan (lets say the XL in Europe is XXL in Japan) something like that. Exceptionally superior product with a reasonable price.
