Sōhei Zukin (Warrior Monk Hood) is an exact reproduction of the traditional cloth hood worn by the Sohei (僧兵), known as Warrior Monks or Monk Samurai. The Sōhei were a sect of Buddhist monks, formed during the Heian Period (794 to 1185), who took up arms in defense of their temples. Into the Sengoku era (Warring State Period) these Sōhei Warrior Monks became a powerful force onto themselves, influencing local Daimyo, then eventually the Shogun and Emperor. These warrior monks could be dressed in simple robes or in full samurai armor, and were instantly recognized by the white cowl (hood) they wore. They generally chose the color white because it symbolizes purity and emancipation. However, other colors could be used to represent specific sects. The Sohei Warrior Monks are sometimes refereed to as a “brotherhood” of warriors who were responsible for the spread of Buddhism throughout Japan. Without them, it is likely Buddhism would had never survived in Japan.
Iron Mountain Armory hand makes this Traditional Sohei cowl after originals from the Sengoku era, which are sill used today by monks, samurai re-enactors and movies. They are adjustable and will fit any head circumference. The extra material can be wrapped under the chin, over the chest, around the neck, or left hanging. The material can be folded over to cover the face or left open to expose the face fully. There are various options to wear this Samurai Monk hood. It is also believed that Shinobi (ninja) were in fact Sohei warrior monks which explains why the shinobi had their face covered and would likely wear armor under their robes. With their legendary mental discipline, fighting style, hood with covered face (exposing only their eyes) and armor worn under their clothing, it could stand to reason that the belief shinobi were in fact contracted warrior monks & why they might had distinguished themselves by wearing different color sohei zukin.
Our samurai clothing and accessories are featured in many movies, tv series, documentaries, including the docudrama “Age of Samurai: Battle for Japan” by Netflix & the Smithsonian Channel.
