Jinbaori is a type of surcoat worn by high-ranking samurai over their armor not only for protection against the elements, but also as a highly visible display of their status and their mon (family crest). Jinbaori are derived from a jacket known as a dofuku, which was worn by important samurai beginning in the late sixteenth century and often incorporated fabrics imported from China or Europe. Beginning in the early seventeenth century, dofuku developed into two types: a short coat with sleeves called ahaori, and the sleeveless jinbaori. Jinbaori have broad lapels, to display the rich fabric of the lining, and a single slit up the back to make for much freer movement. We also offer the option of adding kikko (armored plating) to the top shoulder section.
We offer highly customizable Jinbaori Surcoats, which you can design to match many of our suits of armor. Our samurai clothing and accessories are featured in the docudrama “Age of Samurai: Battle for Japan” by Netflix & the Smithsonian Channel as well as many other movies, tv series and used by historical re-enactors worldwide.

Before Ordering Please Note: Measure your chest with the clothing you will be wearing under it. If you plan to wear with a Traditional Hitatare, or to use it without your yoroi (armor), add at least 5 cm. to your actual chest size. If you plan to wear your Jinbaori with a yoroi (armor), please add 10 cm to your chest size. For lengths, we recommend measuring from your shoulder to mid-thigh. If you have a larger than average chest, add a few extra cm to the front length. Please know that your sizes are for reference only, and may be adjusted by your crafter, we can not guarantee a perfect fit but certainly try. Also if you request a mon to be added, please know that we use heat transfer vinyl decals, we do not do embroider. Standard sizing fits a person of 5′ 8″ (176 cm) tall and 106 cm chest. Jinbaori are usually worn loose fitting. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
