The Gawa Samurai Armor (or Kon Gawa, meaning black leather) features a layer of leather or hide that is added over the steel okegawa Do. This adds an extra layer of detail to the suit of armor, as well as protecting its steel plates from scratching and exposure to the elements. As armor, this style was quite expensive and as a matter of pride, upkeep was quite important. The added layer of gawa (leather) also makes it easier and more economical to decorate and repair minor damages to a samurai’s yoroi.
Our experienced Gashira katchû-shi (Japanese armor smith) uses only quality genuine leather. We can also paint a mon (or crest symbol) onto the chest, as well as customize your yoroi set for you with any of the available options listed here. You can also opt to customize the kabuto (helmet), menpo (mask) or suneate (shin guards).
