Ii Clan were known for their richly lavished vermilion samurai armor, as they dominated the battlefield giving them the reputation and name “The Red Devils“. The Ii clan (ii is pronounced “Ē”) of Tôtômi Province, was 1 of 3 most trusted retainer of the Tokugawa known as “Four Guardians“. Their Gashira (mid ranking) and Taisho (high ranking) samurai would often have their kabuto adorned with Naomasa’s distinctive “lofty golden horns” (made of wood). This samurai gusoku (matching armor set) is crafted using the traditional tosei okegawa ni-mai do design which was the most common armor crafted after 1540.
This particular Ii clan samurai armor set is crafted in honor of their Gashira samurai and comes standard with the o-sode (large shoulder shields) as pictured, however we are happy to craft it with the standard chu-sode (medium shoulder shields) as seen on many of our other armor sets. The standard color of the Ii clan was vermilion with blue odoshi (lace) but are also seen with yellow odoshi as well. This suit features a new kusari (chainmail) haidate and kote, both with brass engraved clan mon (symbol).
