Tengu maedate adorned some samurai kabuto throughout the Sengoku and Edo era. Tengu are from classic Japanese mythology, believed to have been malevolent human-like avian (bird) creatures or deities who lived at the high mountain tops of Japan. The Shugendo sect of monks often told stories of the Tengu, catching the imagination of samurai. The samurai believed adorning their kabuto with maedate (crests) resembling these deities would help gain their favor as well as possibly even their blessing and in turn receive supernatural powers, or simply strike fear into any enemy that faces them. Either way, they make for a great looking and very unique menpo.
