Tokugawa Ieyasu was a truest Taisho of Oda Nobunaga, aiding him in bringing an end to the Sengoku era (warring states) and unifying Japan. After Oda Nobunaga’s death, Ieyasu would serve Hashiba Hideyoshi, under his new shogunate name Toyotomi. After Hideyoshi’s death, and battle of Sekigahara, Ieyasu seized power in 1600. In 3 short years he was appointed as Shogun, which he voluntarily stepped down from in 1605. Although he was not officially the Shogun, he still remained in power until his death in 1616. During his rule, he implemented a set of brilliant rules, designed to keep the Daimyo and samurai in a constant “check”, to serve the Tokugawa Shogunate. These rules were known as the bakuhan. The bakuhan were so well designed, that they were studied and used by rulers of future, far off kingdoms as a system to keep governments stable.
