Oki Tenugui Saiga Kabuto is a hachi (bowl) style helmet which features 2 overlapping top plates. Like the Okitenugui Nari Saiga Kabuto the oki tenugui kabuto is crafted in the form of a folded hand towel embellished with kirigane (raised geometrical designs). This unique style of kabuto requires the hand crafting from an artisan armorer. Because of it’s wide plate design it needed to be crafted with a pure, thick steel, which gives it superior protection over many other kabuto styles. There are only a few existing saiga style kabuto left in existence but almost all are unique in design. Because of the unique design and high level of armor making skill required, the saiga (also spelled Saika by some sources) is considered to be a prestigious kabuto, worn by Daimyo, Taisho and their high ranking samurai warriors. Often, it is finished in natural iron (or russet), to show the high quality of the metal used. Helmets of the Saiga school tend to be rare and highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
Iron Mountain Armory Taisho level samurai armor katchû-shi (Japanese armorer) are always changed when crafting oki tenugui saiga kabuto. The distinguishing miage shiwa (simulated facial wrinkles) and mayu (simulated eyebrows) are all hand hammered and then hand polished. There are no shortcuts in crafting such a beautiful kabuto and we wouldn’t take them even if there were.
