Description

Juban Shitagi: Traditional Samurai Under Shirt

The juban shitagi is a traditional Japanese shirt worn beneath the kimono. Originating from the Sengoku era (Warring States), this garment served multiple purposes: it kept samurai cool, prevented sweat from damaging their outer kimono, and provided a comfortable casual or pajama top at home.  During the warm humid summers, Samurai often changed their juban shitagi during the midday heat, ensuring they stayed fresh and their outer garments remained pristine. This practice highlights the garment’s importance in maintaining both personal hygiene and the longevity of more elaborate clothing.

Today, the juban shitagi can be worn under an iaido gi, kendo gi, or as a light training gi top. It also makes for a traditional casual top, perfect for hot, humid summer nights. These garments are ideal for training, cosplay, reenactment, or simply as a piece of traditional fashion.

Iron Mountain Armory offers the juban shitagi in both narrow sleeve and kosode (wide sleeve) styles. The kosode sleeve option features openings in the armpit area, known as urakumi which not only help with ventilation, but soe the sleeves can wrap around your arm while wearing armor, providing extra protection. Our juban shitagi is handmade from fine medium linen for maximum quality, comfort, durability and a traditional / historical look and feel.

Era-Specific Materials:
 – Edo Era: 100% quality cotton for a softer, more comfortable feel influenced by European trade.
Sengoku Era: 100% quality hemp linen for a durable, authentic look.

Customization:
– Traditional cut juban ideally come down to your hip area (20cm below the waist).
– Custom sizing is available for those who prefer a longer length or specific measurements.

Notable Features:

  • Traditional design inspired by historical garments.
  • Custom sizing options to ensure a perfect fit.
  • High-quality traditional materials for comfort and durability.

Our samurai clothing and accessories are featured in many movies, TV series, and documentaries, including many History Channel documentary and the docudrama “Age of Samurai: Battle for Japan” by Netflix & the Smithsonian Channel.

  1. Liked the quality but the length of the arms and wideness were incorrectly sent based of the receipt, because the order took two months to deliver returning seemed inconvenient, for some reason this review doesn’t have the option comment on the other shintagi I ordered but it also had the same issue. The print came out nice but there was no way to know what it would look like in the store, example pictures would have been appreciated to show what the different placement options would have looked like

    • Thank you for your comment and review. As noted on the top of every page, including the view cart and order page there is roughly a 2 week delay in order processing due to back orders and pandemic issues. This is in addition to the stated 2 to 4 weeks for crafting time (more towards 4 weeks if a mon is selected to be printed). The images of the mon (front / back) should be shown when clicking the ? next to the option or when cycling through the product images. We always ask that if you have any questions, doubts or concerns, to please ask us before placing your order so we may address them, insuring that you know exactly what you are ordering and are not surprised.

If there was an error with your order, please let us know so we may have a chance to resolve the issue.

  2. Ordered narrow sleeve style, it was made incorrectly, sleeves looked like it was the wider sleeves just sewn partially inward toward the armpit in an attempt to make the narrow sleeve style I ordered.

    • Japanese clothing might seem odd to European. All clothing have been made from traditional patterns with review of original clothing, from the 16 ~ 17 century. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to ask us and we can provide you with specific references.

  3. Very comfortable material. Looks legit.

  4. The material and construction are top notch, I made a few mistakes with my measurements as the sleeves were too long but that is entirely on me and easily fixed myself. One note to anyone wanting to customize this to act as an outer kosode instead of an undershirt, be aware there are ties on this that aren’t pictured, next time I order one I will ask if the ties can be left off.
