Cochin kabuto are a folding or collapsible style of helmet which was often worn by high ranking samurai and taisho with the Tatami Gusoku set of armor. The Cochin is a hachi kabuto which features four concentric rings held in place by a metal semicircle with a rotating arm. The rings collapse into themselves for flat storage and then can be raised up and held in place by a toggle which locks into the support arm. Hineno Shikoro, or the plates which hang down from the back of the neck features 5 plates fastened with Kon-Ito Sugake Odoshi (simple lacing) with small fukigayeshi, or the “turn backs” which look like ears. These helmets were frequently worn by the famous “Takeda Clan” during the Azuchi-Momoyama era.
