Aida Kanamono & Kiusho Kanamono are three ornamental support plates used to decorate the the do (cuirass) and/or sode (shoulder shield). Also known at hasso-no-kanamono, they were often made from copper or a soft brass and are generally rectangular in shape. The Aida Kanamono & Kiusho Kanamono are typically added in sets of 3, to compliment the 6 byo (rivets) or more specifically hasso-no-byo. These ornate plates are used to support and protect the under lying ito-mona (armor plate) below, in which the byo is used to connect 2 sections of plating together. Due to the flexing of the armor plating below, the head of the byo would scratch the urushi and eventually break. So the hasso-no-kanamono would act as an elaborate / ornate washer, absorbing the movement of the plates below, thus reducing the strain on the byo.
This set of Aida Kanamono & Kiusho Kanamono can typically be added to your do by sliding the included byo (rivets) through the existing holes of the odoshi (lace). If no holes are in your do or sode, you will need to drill them to add this set. This set comes with three decorative pieces, one aida kanamono (center) and two kiusho kanamono (2 sides). It also includes the 6 decorative byo to hold them in place. The Aida Kanamono & Kiusho Kanamono can also be used to hold the kesho no ita in place as well. Agemaki no kan (decorative back plate with ring) or the agemaki (decorative bow) are not included.
