Shoulder Width

Lay a comfortable shirt on a flat surface, then measure the straight distance between the two shoulder seams or enter the width you would like your shoulder distance to be. (Sizing is more for crafting reference then actual, we may reduce this by upto 15 cm)

Description

The Mune-Ate (chest protector) is more than just cloth armor protection; it’s a symbol of the indomitable warrior spirit that changed the fate of Japan. Historically worn by samurai and ashigaru of the Teppo Tai (matchlock rifle troops), these chest protectors were a hallmark of the brave warriors who ushered in an era of peace through their mastery of the teppo (matchlock rifle). The mune-ate embodies the resilience and adaptability of those who wielded them, ensuring the safety of their chest from the blast of black powder.

During the Edo era, the Teppo Tai warriors would don the mune-ate over a kaji haori (wool fire coat) and pair it with a kaji hachigane (headband), creating a formidable uniform that safeguarded them both in battle and on fire patrol. These chest protectors, often crafted from imported wool, satin, and ramie (linen fiber), were lined with thick paper for added stiffness. Unlike the linen mune-ate worn by peasants and ashigaru, the wool versions didn’t require soaking in water before use.
